Service Description

Workshop Information: Chapter books for the transitional reader offer the opportunity to craft a text that has much of the depth and range of a middle-grade novel, but with tighter construction, peppier pacing, and a distinctively delightful kidlike sensibility. We will focus together on what I believe are the two crucial elements in a successful chapter book: structure and sparkle. How can you give your story a stronger, sturdier structure? How can you enhance the sparkle that should enliven every page? As many chapter books are published in series, we will also look at the challenge of writing books that both stand alone and work together as a whole greater than its parts. I’d like you to submit a synopsis of your chapter-book-in-progress as well as the first few chapters (up to 3,500 words). But if you are still at the exploratory stage and trying to figure out whether this is a literary form you want to pursue, the class should be informative and inspirational for you, as well. I love writing chapter books so much! I want you to find joy in writing them, too.
