“Children’s Nonfiction: A Burgeoning Market”

with Sharlee Glenn

The children’s nonfiction market has exploded over the past few years, driven in part by the new Common Core standards which require that children in grades K-8 read at least 50% nonfiction. That number rises to 70% for students in grades 9-12. According to Book Business Magazine, juvenile nonfiction print sales have grown 28% since 2009, compared to the juvenile fiction growth rate of only 8%. Clearly, there’s never been a better time to write children’s nonfiction. In this session, we will explore together the exciting possibilities of this burgeoning market.

Hugo Award-Worthy: Writing A Spectacular Other-Worldly Novel

with Cheri Pray Earl

When I was a kid, I used to watch Dark Shadows, the only paranormal soap opera on television. I couldn’t get enough, even though the script was, well, less than stellar. I also cannot resist a good ghost story, the jumpy outy kind, as Carol describes them. For me, the more jumpy outy the story, the better. And besides donuts from Provo Bakery, can you think of anything better than a well-crafted paranormal mystery? One that doesn’t end with a predictable Ah Ha! unveiling of a human being under a sheet, like in Scooby Doo?

Good thinking and good writing make for good otherworldly stories, so in four hours you’ll become better thinkers and better writers of spectacular paranormal fiction. I’ll share my Secret Stash of Good Writing Tools and put you to work using them. I’ll also give you some preliminary assignments the month before the workshop begins so you hit the ground running when you arrive at WIFYR. WARNING: I will work you to death, so be afraid. Be very afraid.

NOTE: Enrollment includes afternoon classes for this day.
